No Images In Drupal RSS Feeds

I covered this yesterday, but I thought that I would cover it again today as I have officially confirmed the fix. Soon after setting up Drupal 5.5 I encountered a problem with my RSS feed. Now, for many people no images in the RSS does not create a huge problem, for those of us trying to run a blog, however, it is an issue. Just about every blog has images in its RSS feed and the images tend to be as important as the title for grabbing your attention and getting you to read on.

What causes the linking issues with RSS feeds is the way that the links to your images are listed. To get those images listing, you need to have Absolute URLs as opposed to Relative URLs.

An absolute URL looks like this:

A relative URL looks like this:

"pathtoimage/image.jpg"

Do you see the difference? A relative URL omits your site name from the link. That is not a problem on your own site, nor is it a problem with many desktop newsreaders, but if you look at it through some web based newsreaders like Bloglines, it creates issues. The thing is, many people will not be aware that it is happening because some web based newsreaders can figure out Absolute vs. Relative URLs. Google Reader has no problem with them. It really pays to check your site in a range of readers to make sure that you know what is happening.

The source of this problem is invariable your WYSIWG Editor. We outlined a fix that would switch relative URLS to active URLs in TinyMCE in a previous article. For other editors, you will have to do your own research, but please feel free to post your results.

My suggestion to coders of editors like TinyMCE is to make this a checkbox option rather than something that requires code edits to fix. Sure, people only need to set it once, but it is something that people need easy access to. While the fix is relatively simple, it is still complicated enough that some people won't be able to figure out; that makes it inaccessible and that is simply not acceptable.
